Addressing public concerns regarding the perceived shortage of industrial land for development in Penang, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow offered reassurances, stating that the authorities are currently developing over 700 acres of industrial land in the vicinity of Batu Kawan, Seberang Perai Selatan.
The Chief Minister revealed that once these land developments are completed, they will meet market demand for the next five years. This will ensure that Penang’s industrial sector continues to flourish and remains the state’s primary economic engine.
"In addition to developing this land, we will continue with other plans in the future, such as land acquisition for industrial use, to increase the state’s industrial land reserves," he said.
He made these remarks on Saturday afternoon while officiating the opening of the Ancubic Group's A-Park Light Industrial Park sales gallery in Batu Kawan, which also coincided with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the group and the ESG Association of Malaysia.
The Chief Minister added that Penang has performed exceptionally in the industrial manufacturing sector over the past 50 years. Specifically, the development of the Batu Kawan satellite township has provided a more resilient urban environment for the industry, proving that Penang can move with the times and seize opportunities for advancement.
He noted that Penang’s industrial sector remains in a leading position. According to the latest data, Penang’s approved investment reached a staggering RM71.9 billion in 2023, ranking first in the country.
Furthermore, Penang’s export performance is equally impressive. In January 2024, Penang's total exports accounted for 28.2% of the national share, maintaining its position as the top exporter in the country and demonstrating the inclusive and resilient nature of the state’s industrial sector.
Chow pledged to continue navigating Penang’s future by striving to implement strategic industrial policies and committing to the improvement of basic infrastructure in line with current sustainability trends.
"In terms of infrastructure, the state government is dedicated to promoting the Penang Transport Master Plan. Additionally, projects such as the Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway and the Penang LRT are key directions for the state government," he explained.
To this end, he expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for approving several major infrastructure projects across Penang. This includes the Penang International Airport expansion plan, which will bolster Penang’s efforts to become a hub for trade, tourism, and investment.
